#3 'The Narrow Door'
This month I present a little home-made video! Because I spent December and January exploring the East coast, on windy beaches blessed with days upon days of gorgeous winter sun, 'Narrow Door' was shot in its churches, namely, Clacton Beach...and St Peter's Bethnal Green.
Many of you will know I love reading ancient scripture and poetry; in a modern world saturated with self-help manuals and confused by spiritual relativism and individualism, the perennial wisdom of these texts seems more potent than ever. The Bible can be an of-putting place for some, so let me offer you this Poem by Rumi which intersects so beautifully and encourages us to commit, to study, to try :
These spiritual window-shoppers, who idly ask, 'How much is that?' Oh, I'm just looking. They handle a hundred items and put them down, shadows with no capital.
What is spent is love and two eyes wet with weeping. But these walk into a shop, and their whole lives pass suddenly in that moment, in that shop.
Where did you go? "Nowhere." What did you have to eat? "Nothing much."
Even if you don't know what you want, buy _something,_ to be part of the exchanging flow.
Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah.
It makes absolutely no difference what people think of you.
Rumi, 'We Are Three', Mathnawi VI, 831-845
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.''
That's tomorrow! And it's my FAVOURITE bar - At Kansas Smitty's, Broadway Market. They do marvellous cocktails and the furtniture is largely pianos. Nicest bar people ever. It's wonderful. I'll play songs from my forthcoming album Mathetes. TICKETS
